Frequently Asked Questions
Yes — ISO plans are designed to meet Northern Illinois University’s waiver requirements for international students. After enrolling in an eligible ISO plan, you may submit a waiver request to opt out of the university’s health insurance plan.
However, please note that only students from their second semester onward are eligible to enroll in an ISO plan. First-semester students are required to maintain the NIU student health insurance plan and are not eligible to waive out during their initial term.
ISO plans provide comprehensive health coverage that meets both visa requirements and university expectations, including:
Doctor visits and specialist care
Hospital stays and emergency treatment
Prescription medications
Lab work and diagnostic testing
Mental health services and counseling
Preventive and wellness care
All plans satisfy F-1 and J-1 visa insurance requirements and include essential benefits like medical evacuation and repatriation when required.
ISO plans offer flexible enrollment options ranging from 5 to 12 months, allowing you to choose coverage that aligns with your specific program length.
However, for Northern Illinois University (NIU), your coverage must begin on the first day of classes in order for your waiver to be approved. This start date is available on our website, so please be sure to select it when enrolling.
If you do not see the exact start date you need, please contact our Customer Care team, and they will be happy to assist you.
Yes! With an ISO plan, you can receive in-network benefits when visiting your school’s Student Health Center.
In addition, you’ll have access to a wide range of doctors and specialists through the Aetna PPO network. This gives you the flexibility to see in-network providers not only near your campus, but anywhere across the United States.
Yes! In the very unlikely event your waiver is denied due to plan benefits, we’ll work with you to try and get it approved. If we can’t help resolve it, you’ll get a full refund—just make sure to reach out within 30 days of your plan’s start date.
After you purchase, you will automatically have access to your insurance ID card, confirmation letter, and payment receipt. This will be emailed to you and will also be available for download through your ISO account.
