Health Insurance for UVA International Students: What You Need to Know
ISO Customer Care | Apr 17, 2026 Schools
Starting at the University of Virginia is exciting, with new classes, a new city, and for many, a whole new country. But somewhere between figuring out housing and getting your schedule sorted, there's one task that often catches international students off guard: health insurance verification.
Here's the short version: UVA requires every student to have health insurance. You're automatically charged for the university's Student Health Plan at $3,989 per year. But if that number made you wince, you're not alone. The good news is you have options, and one of them could save you over $2,000 this academic year.
How UVA's Health Insurance Requirement Actually Works
UVA isn't unique in requiring health insurance, most U.S. universities do. What makes it feel confusing at first is the way it's set up. Rather than simply asking you to enroll, UVA automatically adds the Student Health Plan charge to your SIS account and then gives you the opportunity to opt out if you have comparable coverage elsewhere.
This opt-out process is called a waiver. Think of it as saying to the university: "I already have valid coverage - here's the proof." If your plan meets UVA's standards and you submit the waiver on time, that $3,989 charge comes off your bill.
There are two verification windows each year. The fall period runs from July 15 to August 29, 2025. If you're starting in the spring, a separate deadline applies in January. You only need to complete the process once per academic year, but you'll need to do it again every year you're enrolled.
One important note for international students: a waiver is not just about cost. It's about making sure your coverage is active and verified before you arrive in Charlottesville. Don't wait until orientation week.
What UVA Requires from Your Insurance Plan
Not every plan qualifies. UVA has a specific checklist your insurance must meet to be approved as “comparable coverage.” Here's what your plan needs:
- Underwritten and administered in the United States
- Active for the entire academic year (not just a semester)
- Covers inpatient and outpatient care - including behavioral health, within a 75-mile radius of Charlottesville
- No exclusions or waiting periods for pre-existing conditions
- Includes prescription drug coverage
- Provides hospital coverage for both medical/surgical care and mental health conditions
- Unlimited medical and hospital benefits, no dollar maximums
A few plan types that will not be approved: out-of-state Medicaid, out-of-state HMO plans, Health Share plans, international plans, travel plans, and Kaiser Permanente HMOs. This is a common tripping point for international students who may assume their home-country coverage or a basic travel plan will qualify, it won't.
Comparing the UVA Plan to ISO Plans
Over 400 UVA students are currently enrolled with ISO, making it one of the most popular alternatives to the university plan. ISO offers three plans specifically designed to meet UVA's waiver requirements, all using Aetna PPO network, which includes access to UVA Health University Medical Center, Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital, and Bon Secours Urgent Care right in the Charlottesville area.

How to Waive the UVA Student Health Plan Using ISO - Step by Step
The process is straightforward. Here's exactly how it works:
Step 1: Choose your ISO plan. Head to the ISO website and pick the plan that fits your budget and coverage preferences. Make sure your start date aligns with UVA's coverage requirement - for fall, your plan should begin no later than August 1.
Step 2: Enroll online. The whole process takes under five minutes. No paperwork, no waiting. Once you enroll, your insurance ID card, confirmation letter, and payment receipt are emailed to you instantly and available in your ISO account.
Step 3: Submit your waiver to UVA. Log into the UVA Student Health Insurance Waiver portal and select “Student Waive/Enroll.” Upload your ISO insurance documents as proof of coverage.
Step 4: Wait for confirmation. UVA typically reviews waivers within 5–7 business days. Once approved, the $3,989 charge is removed from your SIS account. If you've already paid, it will be refunded.
A Few Things Worth Knowing About Healthcare in Charlottesville
Charlottesville is a college town, and UVA Health is the main hospital system in the area. The UVA Student Health and Wellness center is on campus and is a good first stop for routine care, and here's something many students don't realize: basic evaluation and management services at Student Health and Wellness are included in your comprehensive fee, meaning there's no charge for the visit itself regardless of which insurance plan you have. You may still be charged for labs, medications, or off-campus referrals, which is where your insurance plan matters.
With ISO's Aetna PPO network, you can search for in-network providers before you ever need care, a much better approach than figuring it out in the middle of an urgent situation.
So, Which Plan Is Right for You?
That depends on how you use healthcare. If you generally stay healthy and mainly want protection against unexpected emergencies, ISO Share offers the lowest monthly cost and still meets all of UVA's waiver requirements. If you'd prefer a lower deductible and more predictable costs when you do need care, ISO Care or ISO Care Elite may be worth the difference.
What most UVA international students find is that even the most comprehensive ISO plan costs significantly less than the university plan, while still giving them solid, ACA coverage and access to the same local healthcare network.
Ready to Submit Your Waiver?
Compare plans and enroll in under 5 minutes on the ISO website. Your insurance documents are available the moment you complete enrollment, so you can submit your UVA waiver right away and check one more thing off your pre-arrival list.
