Medical Evacuation & Repatriation Insurance: A Safety Net for International Students

Getting sufficient health insurance is a necessity as an international student - but one of the biggest mistakes students make is overlooking medical evacuation and repatriation coverage.

Most health insurance plans in the U.S. focus on covering medical expenses, but many leave major gaps when it comes to severe emergencies. In situations involving a life-threatening condition or death, the cost of transporting a student to another medical facility or returning their remains home is often not covered by standard health insurance plans.

While these situations are rare, the costs can be extremely high - sometimes reaching hundreds of thousands of dollars for international transportation and specialized medical care.

Because of this, many schools require international students to carry medical evacuation and repatriation coverage. However, unlike standard health insurance, schools often do not provide a school-sponsored option for these benefits, leaving students responsible for finding adequate coverage on their own.

To help guide your decision, we’ve prepared a complete guide to medical evacuation and repatriation coverage below.

What Is Medical Evacuation & Repatriation Insurance?

To begin, let’s start by defining the key terms:

  • Medical evacuation: Emergency transport to a medical facility, usually via helicopter or plane
  • Repatriation of remains: Transporting a deceased individual back to their home country

Plans that offer medical evacuation and repatriation will typically provide a set dollar amount that insurance will cover up to.

For medical evacuation, coverage does not include situations where you are transported to a medical facility via ambulance. Most health insurance plans already cover ambulance-related costs.

Most evacuation cases happen when:

  1. You suffer an accident in an area with limited road access or a truly dire situation that requires quicker transport than an ambulance, requiring air transport
  2. You need to be relocated to a medical facility that has additional resources or is closer to home to optimize your treatment options

Repatriation coverage will typically cover at least the transportation of the insured’s remains, but can also provide additional coverage for funeral arrangements, documentation, cremation, and related services depending on the plan.

Why International Students Specifically Need This Coverage

For international students in the U.S., this coverage isn’t optional - it’s often required.

  • For students: Most U.S. universities require medical evacuation and repatriation coverage. Many school-sponsored insurance options are domestic plans and do not include these benefits, leaving students responsible for securing coverage independently.
  • For J-1 visa holders: U.S. Department of State requirements mandate at least $50,000 in medical evacuation coverage and $25,000 in repatriation coverage.
  • Beyond requirements: Not having coverage can greatly limit your ability to receive emergency transport or coordinate post-death arrangements in your home country. Having coverage helps reduce stress for both students and families during serious emergencies.

In severe situations, this coverage ensures:

  • Immediate access to proper medical care
  • Coordination with hospitals and transport providers
  • Financial protection from extremely high transportation costs

Different Types of Medical Evacuation and Repatriation Coverage

You can get coverage in one of two ways:

  • Purchasing a health insurance plan that already includes evacuation and repatriation benefits
  • Buying a standalone medical evacuation and repatriation plan

There are several options available on both sides, including through providers like ISO Student Health Insurance.

All ISO health insurance plans include medical evacuation and repatriation coverage, allowing students to receive these benefits alongside their medical insurance coverage in a single package.

If you already have sufficient health insurance, ISO also offers a standalone Medical Evacuation and Repatriation plan that provides:

  • $100,000 in medical evacuation coverage
  • $100,000 in repatriation coverage
  • $1,500 in bedside visit coverage

This standalone plan is available for $96 for a full 12 months of coverage, is offered to individuals with valid visa status, and includes the option to add dependents.

What You Should Look For In Your Coverage

When evaluating a standalone plan, look for:

  • High evacuation limits (e.g., $100,000+)
  • Repatriation coverage
  • 24/7 emergency assistance
  • Coordination services
  • Family or bedside visit benefits

Final Thoughts

Medical evacuation and repatriation insurance is often overlooked, but it’s one of the most important protections international students can have.

If your current plan doesn’t include these benefits, a standalone option can provide:

  • Compliance with school requirements
  • Financial protection
  • Peace of mind during emergencies

All at a relatively minimal cost.
