Day-1 CPT: A Resource for International Students Navigating Status After OPT

At ISO, we know that being an international student in the U.S. involves a lot more than just coursework. Between managing your student status, planning your career, and keeping yourself protected along the way, there are a lot of moving pieces and not always a clear guide to help you through them.

One topic we hear about more and more from students is Day-1 CPT (Curricular Practical Training). Whether your OPT is winding down, the H-1B lottery didn't go your way, or you're simply exploring your options for continuing your studies and work authorization, Day-1 CPT can be a practical path but it comes with important decisions that deserve careful thought.

That's why we want to share a resource we think can genuinely help: CISI (Carnegie International Students Institution).

Who Is CISI?

CISI is a nonprofit organization with a straightforward mission: to help international students understand their options and plan their academic and career paths in the U.S. with more confidence. They work with students to reduce information gaps around status timelines, program fit, compliance requirements, and what comes next.

With the guiding mission of "Working Towards a Brighter Future For International Students," CISI helps students evaluate their situation from multiple angles — including their status timeline, academic background, career goals, location, budget, and compliance needs.

Who Might Benefit from Day-1 CPT?

Day-1 CPT may be a relevant option for students who are in one of the following situations:

  • OPT or STEM OPT ending soon
  • Not selected in the H-1B lottery
  • Currently in an H-1B grace period
  • Looking to continue studying while maintaining a compliant work arrangement
  • Holding a U.S. master's degree and considering a second degree
  • Seeking a program that connects with their career direction

It's important to note that Day-1 CPT must be used carefully. It is still part of F-1 student status and requires real enrollment, active study, and a clear connection between the academic program and the student's job. CISI helps students review these key factors before choosing a program so they can make more informed decisions and reduce unnecessary risk.

What Does CISI Offer?

CISI provides free, practical support throughout the Day-1 CPT and school application process:

Free Consultation and Program Matching

CISI offers free consultations to review each student's status, timeline, education background, career direction, budget, and location preference — then helps identify programs that may be a better fit for their academic and status planning needs.

Full Application Support with Fee Waivers

CISI supports students through school selection, application preparation, document submission, I-20 processing, and SEVIS transfer. For many partner schools, students who apply through CISI may also receive application fee waivers. For students with tight timelines, CISI helps track deadlines and processing requirements to keep the process smooth.

Student Community and Experience Sharing

CISI connects students with current student communities where they can learn about course structures, onsite requirements, CPT application tips, and real student experiences so you know what to expect before and after enrollment.

Good Status Scholarship

Students who apply to schools through CISI may be eligible for the Good Status Scholarship, a tax-free scholarship ranging from $200 to $3,000. Students may apply after completing their first semester with a cumulative GPA above 3.0.

At ISO, we're committed to supporting international students beyond just health insurance. Your status, your career, and your wellbeing are all connected — and the more informed you are, the better positioned you are to make decisions that protect your future in the U.S.
