Everything You Need to Know About the H-1B Visa After Graduation

If you’re an international student in the U.S., the H-1B visa is one of the most common paths to keep working in the U.S. after graduation. But the process can feel confusing because it’s employer-driven, time-bound, and (usually) oversubscribed. Here’s the practical, post-graduation view: what the H-1B is, how the timeline works, and how ISO can support you throughout your entire F-1 journey, from OPT to H-1B.

What is an H1B visa?

The H-1B is a nonimmigrant work visa for people employed in a “specialty occupation,” generally roles that require at least a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a specific field related to the job. It is not something you apply for on your own. Your employer sponsors you, files paperwork, and attests to wage and job conditions.

H1B Cap Season Timeline

For cap-subject H-1Bs, employers must first submit an online registration for you during a short window. For the current cycle, USCIS announced:

  • Registration window: March 4–March 19, 2026 (noon ET to noon ET)

  • Selection notifications: by March 31, 2026

  • If selected, employers typically file the full petition starting April 1, and USCIS sets a filing window (often at least 90 days).

If your employer doesn’t register you during that March window, you generally can’t be counted in that year’s cap process.

How Do OPT and H1B Co-exist?

Most students use F-1 OPT (and often STEM OPT) as their bridge after graduation. If your OPT is ending but your employer files a timely, cap-subject H-1B petition requesting a change of status, you may qualify for a cap-gap extension, which can extend your F-1 status (and sometimes work authorization) until your H-1B begins.

This is why timing matters: the goal is to keep your work authorization continuous and avoid avoidable status gaps.

What Do Employers Need To Do?

Even though your employer owns the process, it helps to understand the building blocks so you can spot issues early:

  1. Registration: Employer enters your info in the USCIS system and pays the registration fee.

  2. Labor Condition Application (LCA): Employer files an LCA with the Department of Labor (wage and worksite attestations).

  3. Full petition filing (if selected): Employer submits forms, supporting documents (job duties, degree proof), and fees to USCIS.

Your part: confirm your employer has your correct passport details, your degree documentation, and a clear explanation of how your major ties to the role.

How To Improve Your H1B Lottery Odds

You can’t control the cap, but you can control how “approvable” your case is if selected:

  • Choose roles that clearly match your degree. USCIS focuses on whether the role qualifies as a specialty occupation and whether your background matches the job.

  • Keep documents ready. Diploma/official transcripts, detailed job duties, and any licenses if required.
  • Plan for multiple cycles. Many students need more than one attempt, but STEM OPT can help create runway.
  • Be careful with travel during cap-gap. Travel can affect your status and re-entry; check your school’s international office guidance and your attorney before leaving the U.S.

ISO H1B Insurance

Visa steps are stressful, and your health coverage shouldn’t add extra friction. ISO is here for you across the entire student lifecycle:

  • While you’re on F-1: Plans designed for international students can help you meet school requirements and stay protected while you study.
  • During OPT and STEM OPT: ISO offers OPT-friendly plan options so you can maintain coverage while you work after graduation and navigate changing school/employment circumstances.
  • As you transition to H-1B: If your status or employment situation changes during the H-1B process (registration, cap-gap periods, start dates), ISO can help you understand what plan options fit your current stage so you can stay continuously covered.

Wherever you are in the journey, new student, OPT worker, or preparing for H-1B, ISO helps you stay covered with dedicated plans.

This is general information, not legal advice. For your specific situation, consult your school’s international office (DSO) and a qualified immigration attorney.
